New Delhi: The Delhi government’s decision to resume e-rickshaw registrations from May 15, 2026, has brought a wave of cautious relief to the sector. Announced at a large gathering at Talkatora Stadium, the move is seen as a step in the right direction, though significant concerns remain unresolved.
The event served as a rare opportunity for drivers, dealers, and manufacturers to come together and share their experiences. While the atmosphere was initially hopeful, it quickly turned into a forum for highlighting the systemic issues plaguing the sector.
Drivers described their work environment as increasingly challenging, citing frequent disputes on the road and alleged harassment during enforcement checks. Many claimed that despite following rules, they are often penalized due to arbitrary practices.
“There is no clarity in the system,” said a participant. “Rules seem to change depending on who is enforcing them.”

The Delhi Transport Minister acknowledged the issues raised during the meeting and assured attendees of the government’s commitment to improving the situation. He emphasized the role of e-rickshaws in promoting sustainable urban mobility and providing affordable transport options.
Despite these assurances, many participants remain skeptical. They stressed the need for consistent policy enforcement and protection against unfair practices. Suggestions included better training for enforcement officials and the establishment of a grievance redressal system.
E-rickshaws have become an integral part of Delhi’s transport landscape, especially in densely populated areas where larger vehicles cannot operate efficiently. They offer a convenient and eco-friendly solution for short-distance travel.
However, the sector’s future depends on how effectively current challenges are addressed. Without systemic reforms, stakeholders fear that the cycle of uncertainty will continue.
